- Abstract
- The immune system has evolved to mitigate host pathology in the event of microbial infection and circumvent re-infection. Our ability to exploit host immunity through vaccination is undoubtedly one of the most important medical interventions of all times. Indeed the eradication of an infectious disease, smallpox, and our polio control programs along with our ability to prevent hepatitis B virus and human papilloma virus-associated cancers through vaccination are testament to human medical ingenuity. An explosion in our understanding of host immune signaling networks that promote or antagonize immunity has also lead to dramatic advances in the treatment of certain cancers and autoimmune diseases.
